The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the ninjurin (for nerve injury induced) family. It is a cell surface adhesion protein that is upregulated in Schwann cells surrounding the distal segment of injured nerve, and promotes neurite outgrowth, thus may have a role in nerve regeneration after nerve injury. A study in Sprague Dawley rats demonstrated that the NINJ2 transcript is a potential marker for early postmortem interval (EPMI) estimation in brain tissue [Wang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.legalmed.2019.04.008]. Its expression initially increased and then decreased after death, and mathematical models incorporating temperature and postmortem interval showed it had a high coefficient of determination (>80%) and low prediction error (<3 hours) in validation experiments, with its model achieving the highest accuracy among four tested genes.
