This gene encodes a member of the steroid-thyroid hormone-retinoid receptor superfamily. The encoded protein may act as a transcription factor. Mutations in this gene have been associated with disorders related to dopaminergic dysfunction, including Parkinson disease, schizophernia, and manic depression. Misregulation of this gene may be associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described, but their biological validity has not been determined. Forensic Context
A study in humans and rats demonstrated that the NR4A2 is a significant diagnostic biomarker for myocardial infarction [Wei et al. DOI:10.3389/fimmu.2022.1061800]. A study in humans identified the NR4A2 as a "seed" gene in a protein-protein interaction network cluster associated with depressed suicide, derived from a co-expression module in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex where gene expression progressively decreased from controls to MDD non-suicides to MDD suicides [Zeng et al. DOI:10.1016/j.psychres.2020.113513].
