Summary

Netrin is included in a family of laminin-related secreted proteins. The function of this gene has not yet been defined; however, netrin is thought to be involved in axon guidance and cell migration during development. Mutations and loss of expression of netrin suggest that variation in netrin may be involved in cancer development. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Forensic Context

A topographic transcriptomic analysis in mice identified nucleus accumbens shell (NAcSh)-enhanced transcripts, including NTN1 which was used as a seed transcript for its highly specific enhanced expression in this reward-related brain region [Crofton et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Neuropharm.2020.108398]. A study in humans and rodents demonstrated that acute opioid intoxication increases DNA methylation at the promoter of the NTN1 gene, which is mechanistically linked to reduced translation of the kappa-opioid receptor (KOR) via Grb7 [Reid et al. DOI:10.3390/Ijms231911804].
