Summary

This gene encodes a member of the neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) family. This kinase is a membrane-bound receptor that, upon neurotrophin binding, phosphorylates itself and members of the MAPK pathway. Signalling through this kinase leads to cell differentiation. Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that NTRK2 mRNA expression was analyzed via qRT-PCR in postmortem cerebellar tissue from individuals with traumatic frontal cortex injuries compared to a reference group, but no significant changes were detected in this investigation [Schober et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-014-1129-3]. In a separate bioinformatic analysis in brown rats, NTRK2 was identified as a gene enriched in the neurotrophin signaling pathway, which is associated with spinal cord injury self-repair [Liu et al. DOI:10.1097/BRS.0000000000001323]. A study in human traumatic brain injury cases demonstrated that cerebellar mRNA expression of the NTRK2 showed a significant increase for short survival times (less than two hours) compared to controls (p<0.1), with this expression change occurring faster and stronger in the cerebellum than in other brain regions, indicating its constitutive strength and reaction to trauma for potential wound age estimation [Staffa et al.
