This gene encodes a beta-ketoacyl synthetase. The encoded enzyme is required for elongation of fatty acid chains in the mitochondria. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.[provided by RefSeq, Feb 2009]
A study in mice, rats, monkeys, and human cells demonstrated that ionizing radiation significantly alters cutaneous fatty acid metabolism, with the gene Oxsm being upregulated in irradiated skin tissues [Tu et al. DOI:10.1016/j.jdermsci.2023.01.001]. This integrative multi-omic analysis identified Oxsm as a fatty acid-associated gene involved in fatty acid metabolism and biosynthesis pathways that are enriched following radiation exposure.
