The product of this gene belongs to the family of purinoceptors for ATP. This receptor functions as a ligand-gated ion channel with high calcium permeability. The main pharmacological distinction between the members of the purinoceptor family is the relative sensitivity to the antagonists suramin and PPADS. The product of this gene has the lowest sensitivity for these antagonists. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants, some protein-coding and some not protein-coding, have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2012]
A study in mice demonstrated that the P2RX4 was significantly upregulated (1.97-fold) in injured dorsal root ganglia following spinal nerve ligation, a model of neuropathic pain [Wu et al. In a rat model of radiation-induced lung injury, single-cell transcriptomic analysis identified the orthologous rat gene for the P2RX4 as being associated with inflammatory processes [Shi et al. A study in rats demonstrated that the purinergic receptor P2X 4 (P2rx4) is a member of a brain co-expression module negatively correlated with voluntary alcohol consumption, and its expression is positively correlated with the hub gene Lrap [Saba et al.
