This gene encodes a serine/threonine protein kinase related to the dual specific mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MAPKK) family. Evidence suggests that mitotic phosphorylation is required for its catalytic activity. The encoded protein may be involved in the activation of lymphoid cells and support testicular functions, with a suggested role in the process of spermatogenesis. A study in mice demonstrated that the PBK transcript, a gene expression marker for immune response, was upregulated 5.6-fold in the injured ipsilateral neocortex three days after a closed head weight-drop injury [Israelsson et al. DOI:10.1089/neu.2008.0676]. In a separate investigation using mouse models of burn injury and trauma-hemorrhage, the PBK was identified as a gene expression marker for immune response and was found to be upregulated in common in splenocytes at day seven post-injury [Lederer et al.
