Summary

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) family, and PDE4 subfamily. This PDE hydrolyzes the second messenger, cAMP, which is a regulator and mediator of a number of cellular responses to extracellular signals. Thus, by regulating the cellular concentration of cAMP, this protein plays a key role in many important physiological processes. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene.[provided by RefSeq, Jul 2011]

Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that in skeletal muscle of heavier monozygotic co-twins, the PDE4A gene was downregulated compared to their leaner siblings, indicating its role in growth and nutrient-sensing pathways associated with acquired obesity [van der Kolk et al. DOI:10.1016/j.xcrm.2021.100226]. A study in mice demonstrated that phosphodiesterase 4A (Pde4a) was identified as a downregulated gene in skeletal muscle following incised injury, showing an 8.755-fold decrease in expression at 12 hours post-injury compared to controls in a DNA microarray analysis [Gaballah et al. DOI:10.1016/j.forsciint.2016.06.027].
