Forensic Context
A study in humans demonstrated that the PELI1 transcript was upregulated 1.4-fold in the dopamine cell-enriched ventral midbrain of chronic cocaine abusers compared to controls and was diagnostic for cohort assignment [Bannon et al. DOI:10.1038/Npp.2014.70]. In mice and microglial cell models of methamphetamine-induced neuroinflammation, the PELI1 was identified as a target of miR-142a-3p and miR-155-5p, with its expression negatively correlated with miR-142a-3p in vivo and in vitro, and its inhibition shown to suppress inflammatory effects by activating p38 MAPK and NF-κB pathways [Xu et al.
