The protein encoded by this gene is a ubiquitous actin monomer-binding protein belonging to the profilin family. It is thought to regulate actin polymerization in response to extracellular signals. There are two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms described for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

A study in cynomolgus macaques demonstrated that acute and chronic methamphetamine administration induced significant hippocampal volumetric atrophy and altered gene expression [Choi et al. DOI:10.1016/j.taap.2018.05.031]. In humans, analysis of blood gene expression profiles after severe burn injury identified the PFN2 as a temporal expression profile gene exhibiting a significantly increasing expression trend from 0 to 7 days post-burn [Wu et al. DOI:10.1016/j.burns.2018.08.022].
