Summary

This gene encodes a protein involved in glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchor biosynthesis. The GPI-anchor, a glycolipid containing three mannose molecules in its core backbone, is found on many blood cells where it serves to anchor proteins to the cell surface. The encoded protein and another GPI synthesis protein, PIGO, function in the transfer of ethanolaminephosphate to the third mannose in GPI. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the PIGF was identified as a single-gene blood biomarker differentiating methamphetamine dependents without psychosis from those with methamphetamine-associated psychosis (MAP) [Breen et al. DOI:10.1038/tp.2016.67]. It was part of a ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis module downregulated in MAP and was validated as a putative MAP biomarker through convergent functional genomic evidence, with a machine-learning classifier achieving 95% accuracy in differentiating the two subject groups.
