Summary

Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase phosphorylates the inositol ring of phosphatidylinositol at the 3-prime position. The enzyme comprises a 110 kD catalytic subunit and a regulatory subunit of either 85, 55, or 50 kD. This gene encodes the 85 kD regulatory subunit. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase plays an important role in the metabolic actions of insulin, and a mutation in this gene has been associated with insulin resistance. Forensic Context

A study in mice demonstrated that the PIK3R1 was markedly upregulated in septic myocardium following cecal ligation and puncture and was localized at the center of a key gene co-expression network [Yan et al. DOI:10.3389/fphys.2022.903164]. In a separate investigation of LPS-induced endotoxemic liver injury in mice, the PIK3R1 was identified as a downstream component of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, where its phosphorylation was increased by miR-5101, and clinical database analysis of human sepsis patients revealed its expression was significantly down-regulated in non-survivors, demonstrating high diagnostic value [Yang et al.
