PIWIL4 belongs to the Argonaute family of proteins, which function in development and maintenance of germline stem cells (Sasaki et al., 2003 [PubMed 12906857]).[supplied by OMIM, Mar 2008]

Forensic Context

A study in mice demonstrated that the PIWIL4 is essential for spermatogenesis and repression of transposons in the male germline [Ross et al. DOI:10.1038/nature12987]. Research in golden hamsters further established that the PIWIL4 binds piRNAs and is required for male and female infertility, causing meiotic arrest of spermatogenesis and arrest at the 2-cell stage in embryogenesis [Xin Wang et al. DOI:10.1038/s41580-022-00528-0].
