This gene encodes a pleckstrin homology (PH) domain-containing protein. The PH domain is found near the N-terminus and contains a putative phosphatidylinositol 3, 4, 5-triphosphate-binding motif (PPBM). Elevated expression of this gene has been observed in some melanomas. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, May 2017]
Forensic Context
A study in humans demonstrated that the PLEKHA4 gene harbored the most significant intragenic differentially methylated cytosine in the Brodmann area 9 of male suicide victims who died by hanging, with subsequent gene ontology analysis of the hippocampus showing enrichment for nervous system regulation and cell structural integrity [Kouter et al. DOI:10.1016/j.jad.2019.04.077]. In rhesus macaques, transcriptomic analysis identified the PLEKHA4 gene as a shared upregulated differentially expressed gene in left ventricular tissue from animals with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and sudden cardiac death when compared to both pediatric and adult human HCM datasets [Rivas et al.
