Summary

The protein encoded by this gene is an RNA-binding protein that regulates pre-mRNA splicing, export of mRNAs from the nucleus, protein translation, and mRNA stability. The encoded protein is involved in myelinization and oligodendrocyte differentiation and may play a role in schizophrenia. Forensic Context

A systematic review of postmortem human brain studies found that the QKI mRNA, an oligodendrocyte-specific RNA-binding protein, showed decreased transcription in the orbitofrontal cortex of individuals who died by suicide compared to controls [Yamamoto et al. DOI:10.3390/Ijms25115750].
