This gene encodes a GTPase-activating protein (GAP) that is a compoment of the centralspindlin complex. This protein binds activated forms of Rho GTPases and stimulates GTP hydrolysis, which results in negative regulation of Rho-mediated signals. This protein plays a regulatory role in cytokinesis, cell growth, and differentiation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. There is a pseudogene for this gene on chromosome 12. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2016]
A study in mice demonstrated that the RACGAP1 was upregulated in the corpus callosum-external capsule at 2 days post-traumatic brain injury, where it was identified as a unique differentially expressed gene [Kounelis-Wuillaume et al. DOI:10.1177/08977151251390528]. In rhesus macaques with radiation-induced lung injury, transcriptomic analysis identified the RACGAP1 as a downregulated transcript specifically in survivor-specific differential gene expression, associated with processes related to cell-cycle regulation and repair [Thakur et al. DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2021.03.058].
