This gene encodes the carrier protein involved in the transport of retinol (vitamin A alcohol) from the liver storage site to peripheral tissue. Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin necessary for growth, reproduction, differentiation of epithelial tissues, and vision. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2008]
A study in mice identified retinol binding protein 1 (RBP1) as a retinoic acid-related transcript with enhanced expression in the nucleus accumbens shell [Crofton et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Neuropharm.2020.108398]. In a separate investigation in mice, radiation exposure from α-particles and γ-rays induced characteristic down-regulation of plasma retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) in liver, a pattern distinct from chemical hepatotoxicants [Roudkenar et al. DOI:10.1269/jrr.07078].
