Summary

This locus represents naturally occurring readthrough transcription between the neighboring LOC127814295 (uncharacterized LOC127814295) and RGS5 (regulator of G-protein signaling 5) genes on chromosome 1. Some variants of the readthrough transcript encode novel proteins with unique N-termini. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2022]

Forensic Context

A study in human corpus cavernosum tissue identified RGS5 as a gene marker highly expressed in the vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) cluster [Zhao et al. DOI:10.1038/s41467-022-31950-9]. A subsequent cross-species analysis in human and rat tissues confirmed RGS5 as a marker for vascular SMCs in humans, while in rats, VSMCs could also be distinguished by high expression of Rgs5 [Yin et al. DOI:10.1016/j.celrep.2024.114760].
