A study in mice demonstrated that brief ethanol exposure significantly activated the expression of numerous alcohol-responsive genes in primary cortical astrocytes, including the RGS7 which was upregulated alongside other inflammatory-immune response markers [Pignataro et al. DOI:10.1002/Brb3.125]. In humans, transcriptional network analysis of postmortem prefrontal cortex identified coexpression modules for lifetime alcohol consumption that were significantly enriched for genetic variants from alcohol dependence GWAS and for genes from a meta-analysis of alcohol-drinking behavior in mice [Farris et al.
