This gene encodes a member of the SFRP family that contains a cysteine-rich domain homologous to the putative Wnt-binding site of Frizzled proteins. SFRPs act as soluble modulators of Wnt signaling. Methylation of this gene is a potential marker for the presence of colorectal cancer. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
Forensic Context
A study in human carotid atherosclerosis samples utilized the SFRP2 as a marker for manual annotation of NKT cell clusters during single-cell RNA sequencing analysis [Xue et al. DOI:10.3233/JAD-230559]. In a separate human ex vivo skin model of burn injuries, the SFRP2 was reported as a target of miR-218-5p, which enhances apoptosis, though this specific interaction was not experimentally studied within that paper [Foessl et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms22179209].
