Secreted frizzled-related protein 4 (SFRP4) is a member of the SFRP family that contains a cysteine-rich domain homologous to the putative Wnt-binding site of Frizzled proteins. SFRPs act as soluble modulators of Wnt signaling. The expression of SFRP4 in ventricular myocardium correlates with apoptosis related gene expression. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
Forensic Context
A study in humans demonstrated that the SFRP4 was included as an mRNA marker for menstrual secretion identification in a targeted massively parallel sequencing panel, but all markers detecting the SFRP4 were removed during panel optimization [Neis et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2024.103125]. The SFRP4 was also mentioned as a menstrual blood-specific mRNA marker in a collaborative exercise evaluating RNA/DNA co-extraction for skin and contact trace identification [Haas et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2015.01.002].
