This gene is a member of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family and encodes a phosphoprotein with a PX (phox homology) domain. The protein phosphorylates several target proteins and has a role in neutral amino acid transport and activation of potassium and chloride channels. Alternate transcriptional splice variants, encoding different isoforms, have been characterized. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
A study in mice demonstrated that the SGK3 was upregulated in the dorsal raphe nucleus following passive MDMA administration compared to saline controls [Fernandez-Castillo et al. DOI:10.1111/J.1601-183X.2011.00735.X], while separate research in mouse cortical astrocytes showed that brief ethanol exposure significantly activated the SGK3 as part of a broader heat shock pathway response [Pignataro et al. DOI:10.1002/Brb3.125]. In a separate investigation of traumatic brain injury in mice, the SGK3 was found to be uniquely downregulated in the corpus callosum-external capsule at two days post-injury [Kounelis-Wuillaume et al. DOI:10.1177/08977151251390528].
