A study in humans identified the SLC16A9 as a top differentially expressed gene in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in alcohol use disorder [Willis et al. DOI:10.1038/S41380-024-02777-1], and a separate study in humans found its transcript upregulated 1.4-fold in the dopamine cell-enriched ventral midbrain of chronic cocaine abusers [Bannon et al.
