This gene encodes a member of a member of a high affinity glutamate transporter family. This gene functions in the termination of excitatory neurotransmission in central nervous system. Mutations are associated with episodic ataxia, Type 6. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.[provided by RefSeq, Feb 2014]
A study in humans undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass demonstrated that acute left ventricular ischemia induces significant changes in miRNA and mRNA expression [Saddic et al. DOI:10.1152/physiolgenomics.00049.2015]. Among the findings, the mRNA for the SLC1A3 (SLC1A3), which functions in amino acid transport, was identified as a predicted and anticorrelated target (Pearson r = -0.72) of the upregulated miRNA miR-483-3p, with this miRNA-mRNA pair emerging from integrated sequencing analysis of postischemic myocardial tissue.
