Enables sodium:phosphate symporter activity. Involved in several processes, including phosphate ion homeostasis; response to cadmium ion; and response to lead ion. Located in several cellular components, including apical plasma membrane; mitotic spindle; and nuclear speck. Implicated in several diseases, including Fanconi syndrome (multiple); chronic kidney disease; hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets with hypercalciuria; hypophosphatemic nephrolithiasis/osteoporosis 1; and nephrolithiasis. Forensic Context
A study in humans demonstrated that the SLC34A1 is expressed in kidney tissue with an average read count of 16,085 and was part of a targeted 46-mRNA biomarker panel for definitive organ identification using massively parallel sequencing, which showed high specificity and successfully identified tissue sources in a single-blind study [Hanson & Ballantyne DOI:10.3390/genes8110319]. The SLC34A1 is also cited as a marker for kidney identification in forensic transcriptomics reviews summarizing tissue identification applications [Lei et al. DOI:10.1093/gpbjnl/qzag007].
