The protein encoded by this gene is a pH-sensitive sodium-dependent phosphate transporter. Phosphate uptake is increased at lower pH. Defects in this gene are a cause of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis. Three transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, May 2010]
A study in humans developed a targeted RNA sequencing assay for organ tissue identification, where the SLC34A2 was expressed in kidney tissue with an average read count of 16,085 [Hanson & Ballantyne 10.3390/genes8110319]. A study in mice demonstrated that the SLC34A2 exhibited differential expression patterns depending on the radiation type and target cell, with under-expression observed specifically after Kupffer cell-specific α-particle exposure and over-expression after endothelial cell-specific α-particle, neutron, and γ-ray exposures [Roudkenar et al. DOI:10.1269/jrr.07078].
