Summary

Enables magnesium:sodium antiporter activity. Involved in mitochondrial magnesium ion transmembrane transport. Located in mitochondrial inner membrane and plasma membrane. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]

Forensic Context

A study in mice demonstrated that peripheral blood gene expression signatures, including the SLC41A3 (SLC41A3), can diagnose partial body radiation exposure, with a signature for hind limb irradiation across 0.5, 2, and 10 Gy doses predicting radiation status versus non-irradiated controls with 79-100% accuracy [Meadows et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0011535]. In human research, the SLC41A3 was also identified as a single-gene biomarker capable of differentiating methamphetamine dependents with psychosis from those without in a machine-learning classifier achieving 95% accuracy [Breen et al. DOI:10.1038/tp.2016.67].
