Enables gamma-aminobutyric acid:sodium:chloride symporter activity. Involved in gamma-aminobutyric acid transport and monocarboxylic acid transport. Predicted to be located in basolateral plasma membrane. Predicted to be active in cell projection and plasma membrane. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]
A study in mice demonstrated that the SLC6A12 mRNA was significantly upregulated in ante-mortem burned skin compared to controls, identifying it as a potential biomarker for vital reaction [Liu et al. DOI:10.1007/s12024-022-00474-5]; however, subsequent validation in human autopsy specimens showed its expression did not change significantly in burned human skin [Liu et al. DOI:10.1007/s12024-022-00474-5]. In a separate investigation in rats, the SLC6A12 was significantly upregulated in striatal microglia/macrophages at 2 hours and 3 days following a binge methamphetamine regimen [Kays & Yamamoto DOI:10.3390/brainsci9120340].
