Forensic Context
A study in human whole blood demonstrated that the SMAP2 mRNA exhibits significant diurnal differential expression for time-of-day prediction, with peak expression at 08.00h and a valley at 02.00h [Gosch et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2023.102915]. The qPCR validation in dried and aged bloodstains showed that the SMAP2 maintained this significant differential expression in stains stored for 12 hours and one week at room temperature, confirming its forensic suitability for time-of-day estimation in aged evidentiary samples.
