Summary

This gene encodes a phosphoinositide phosphatase that regulates levels of membrane phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate. As such, expression of this enzyme may affect synaptic transmission and membrane trafficking. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Forensic Context

A study in rats demonstrated that the SYNJ1 was significantly altered in expression on day 7 following a 20% total body surface area burn injury, as identified through microarray analysis of liver tissue [Jayaraman et al. DOI:10.1016/j.jss.2007.05.025]. In a separate study of contusive spinal cord injury in rats, the SYNJ1 was identified as a synaptic vesicle protein with changes in expression found after injury [Aimone et al. DOI:10.1016/j.expneurol.2004.05.042].
