This gene encodes a member of the G protein-coupled receptor family. The protein interacts with thromboxane A2 to induce platelet aggregation and regulate hemostasis. A mutation in this gene results in a bleeding disorder. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2009]
A study in humans demonstrated that the TBXA2R is highly expressed in cavernosal trabecular smooth muscle cells (CCSMC) and is involved in smooth muscle contraction via thromboxane signalling, with its expression upregulated in patients with diabetes mellitus erectile dysfunction [Zhao et al. DOI:10.1038/s41467-022-31950-9]. In a separate human study, exosomal mRNA for the TBXA2R was found to be upregulated in the plasma of patients with heat stroke, where it was associated with platelet activation pathways [Li et al. DOI:10.3389/fimmu.2021.624753].
