This gene encodes a coactivator of the androgen receptor, a transcription factor which is activated by androgen and has a key role in male sexual differentiation. The encoded protein is thought to regulate androgen receptor activity and may have a role to play in the treatment of prostate cancer. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
A study in humans demonstrated that the TGFB1I1 gene expression was down-regulated in menstrual blood-derived stem cells with increasing donor age, identifying it as a key biomarker of cell aging [Chen et al. DOI:PMC4713568]. Another study in severely burned adult humans found that the TGFB1I1 gene was up-regulated in circulating leukocytes from patients with a burn size greater than 40% total body surface area, forming part of a 39-gene signature associated with this injury severity [Sood et al. DOI:10.0000000000000905].
