Summary

The protein encoded by this gene forms a heteromeric complex with type II TGF-beta receptors when bound to TGF-beta, transducing the TGF-beta signal from the cell surface to the cytoplasm. The encoded protein is a serine/threonine protein kinase. Mutations in this gene have been associated with Loeys-Dietz aortic aneurysm syndrome (LDAS). Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2008]

Forensic Context

A study in rats demonstrated that irradiation induces significant alterations in mRNA and miRNA expression in lung tissue, with 2183 transcripts up-regulated and 2917 down-regulated, alongside 15 up-regulated and 8 down-regulated miRNA species [Xie et al. DOI:10.1186/1748-717X-9-111]. Separately, a single-cell RNA sequencing study in mice with spinal cord injury identified the TGFBR1 as a hub gene highly expressed 14-days post-injury, where it was closely related to immune cell infiltration and demonstrated high diagnostic efficacy with an AUC of 0.995 in ROC curve analysis [Bao et al. DOI:10.1186/s13018-023-04195-5].
