Predicted to be involved in signal transduction. Predicted to be located in membrane. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]
A study in rats demonstrated that the TMEM116 is a member of a brain gene co-expression module associated with voluntary alcohol consumption [Saba et al. DOI:10.1111/Gbb.12698]. In a separate investigation using differentiated human neuronal cells, the TMEM116 was consistently differentially regulated across exposures to six different per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), identifying it as a potential biomarker for neuronal PFAS toxicity [Running et al. DOI:10.1021/Acschemneuro.4C00652].
