This gene encodes a protein that is capable of inducing formation of cartilage in vivo. Although other bone morphogenetic proteins are members of the TGF-beta superfamily, this gene encodes a protein that is not closely related to other known growth factors. This gene is expressed as alternatively spliced variants that share an N-terminal protease domain but differ in their C-terminal region. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2008]

A study in humans and mice demonstrated that the BMP1 is a migrasome-related gene upregulated in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) cases and is a component of a diagnostic gene signature with robust predictive performance [Zhu et al. DOI:10.3390/biomedicines12071626]. A study in mice demonstrated that formalin-induced inflammatory pain significantly upregulated the BMP1 gene, which is involved in G protein-mediated cell signaling, as the most pronounced change in the primary somatosensory cortex one hour post-injury [Erdei et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms26083538].
