This gene encodes a member of the uroplakin family, a group of transmembrane proteins that form complexes on the apical surface of the bladder epithelium. Mutations in this gene may be associated with renal adysplasia. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.[provided by RefSeq, Nov 2009]
A study in humans demonstrated that uroplakin III (UPIII) protein, detected via specific immunohistochemical staining of urothelial cells from urine precipitates, was a highly specific marker for forensic urine identification, showing positive results in 15/15 samples from 20 mL urine and 13/15 from 1 mL urine with no cross-reactivity to other tested body fluids [Akutsu et al. DOI:10.1111/J.1556-4029.2010.01325.X].
