This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the pro-apoptotic subfamily within the Bcl-2 family of proteins. The encoded protein binds to Bcl-2 and possesses the BH3 domain. The protein directly targets mitochondria and causes apoptotic changes, including loss of membrane potential and the release of cytochrome c. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2015]
Forensic Context
A study in human cadavers demonstrated that the apoptotic thanatotranscriptome in liver tissue shows significant postmortem changes, with the BNIP3L being down-regulated by -8884.3565 fold in decaying tissues compared to a 6-hour control, indicating its role as an apoptosis-related gene whose expression is markedly suppressed during decay [Javan et al. DOI:10.1007/S12024-015-9704-6].
