TDC1
This gene encodes a transmembrane protein that plays a key regulatory role in the process of autophagy. The ectopic overexpression of the encoded protein in cultured cells triggers autophagy even under nutrient-rich conditions. This gene is overexpressed in pancreatitis affected acinar cells where the encoded protein mediates sequestration and degradation of potentially deleterious activated zymogen granules in a process termed, zymophagy. Forensic Context
A study in humans using integrative machine learning on multi-level molecular data from monozygotic twin pairs identified the VMP1 as a gene (CpG site) associated with diet, where lower methylation in heavier twins was linked to lower consumption of sucrose and vitamin D [Kibble et al. DOI:10.1098/rsos.200872]. In rhesus macaques, RNA-Seq analysis of left ventricular tissue from animals with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy identified the VMP1 as a differentially expressed gene that was upregulated in affected animals [Rivas et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-024-82770-4].
