This gene encodes a highly conserved metalloprotein. A similar protein in bacteria acts as an endoribonuclease, and is thought to function in ribosomal RNA maturation and ribosome assembly. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]
