Enables RNA binding activity. Involved in cellular hyperosmotic response; cellular response to tumor necrosis factor; and negative regulation of programmed cell death. Located in cytosol. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]
A study in humans demonstrated that the YBX3 mRNA is downregulated in the serum of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) compared to healthy controls, showing excellent diagnostic performance with an AUROC of 0.944, 90% sensitivity, and 88.9% specificity, and its expression correlates with cigarette pack-years [Di Mauro et al. DOI:10.3390/Ijms21228812]. In a separate forensic investigation on human cardiac tissue, the YBX3 was identified as a potential biomarker for mechanical asphyxia, showing differential expression when compared to deaths from craniocerebral injury and hemorrhagic shock [Zeng et al. DOI:10.1007/S00414-017-1616-4].
