This gene encodes a protein with similarity to the epsin family of endocytic adapter proteins. The encoded protein interacts with clathrin, the adapter protein AP-1 and phosphoinositides. This protein may be involved in the formation of clathrin coated vesicles and trafficking between the trans-Golgi network and endosomes. Mutations in this gene are associated with a susceptibility to schizophrenia and psychotic disorders. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2010]
Forensic Context
A study in humans identified the CLINT1 as an important gene in a lasso regression model for predicting chronological age from bloodstain RNA, where it had a positive coefficient in the RNAgE data set [Dørum et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2023.102976]. This research, which analyzed RNA-Seq data from dried blood stains and public whole blood samples, generated a lasso-selected gene list that achieved a mean absolute error of 4.46 years for age prediction in the RNAgE cohort, demonstrating the efficacy of this biomarker within a multi-gene panel for forensic age estimation.
