This locus encodes a protein that may play a role in the cellular response to arterial injury through involvement in vascular remodeling. A study in mice demonstrated that the CTHRC1 is expressed by myofibroblasts that promote repair post-myocardial infarction, and a unique subset of cardiac fibroblasts expressing high levels of the CTHRC1 reduced the risk of death from cardiac rupture [Li et al. DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2022.768834]. In human skin, the CTHRC1 was identified as one of three key genes specific to hypertrophic scar fibroblasts, indicating its role in scar formation [Cheng et al.
