Summary

This gene belongs to the dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) gene family. The encoded enzyme plays a role in nitric oxide generation by regulating cellular concentrations of methylarginines, which in turn inhibit nitric oxide synthase activity. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Forensic Context

A study in humans and mice demonstrated that the DDAH1 is a diagnostic mRNA marker for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), with its expression significantly higher in HCM samples compared to normal controls across multiple human heart tissue datasets and validated in a mouse transverse aortic constriction model [Haozhen Yu et al.
