This gene encodes a member of the hydratase/ isomerase superfamily. The protein encoded is a key mitochondrial enzyme involved in beta-oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. It catalyzes the transformation of 3 -cis and 3 - trans-enoyl-CoA esters arising during the stepwise degradation of cis-, mono-, and polyunsaturated fatty acids to the 2 - trans-enoyl-CoA intermediates. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described. [provided by RefSeq, May 2 010]
A study in rats demonstrated that the ECI1 is downregulated (-1.62-fold) in right ventricular tissue during monocrotaline-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension and failure, where it is categorized among dysregulated mitochondrial and metabolic genes [Potus et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms19092730]. A study in mice demonstrated that 3,2 trans-enoyl-CoA isomerase (Dci), a gene involved in the β-oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids, was specifically down-regulated following Kupffer cell-specific in vivo exposure to α-particles in the liver [Roudkenar et al. DOI:10.1269/jrr.07078].
