This gene encodes a secreted endothelial cell protein that contains two epidermal growth factor-like domains. The encoded protein may play a role in regulating vasculogenesis. This protein may be involved in the growth and proliferation of tumor cells. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2012]
A study in humans demonstrated that the EGFL7 gene was significantly upregulated in heart tissue from sudden unexplained death (SUD) cases compared to heart-healthy controls, with its expression involved in angiogenesis, blood vessel development, vasculogenesis, and cell adhesion [Neubauer et al. DOI:10.1007/S00414-025-03414-4]. A study in humans identified CD19 and GPR65 as key sialylation-related genes for predicting sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), with CD19 significantly upregulated in ARDS patient blood samples and both genes co-enriched in apoptosis and B-cell receptor signaling pathways [Liu et al. DOI:10.3389/fimmu.2025.1528769].
