Summary

EMCN is a mucin-like sialoglycoprotein that interferes with the assembly of focal adhesion complexes and inhibits interaction between cells and the extracellular matrix (Kinoshita et al., 2001 [PubMed 11418125]).[supplied by OMIM, Mar 2008]

Forensic Context

A study in human patients with severe erectile dysfunction using single-cell RNA sequencing of penile cavernous tissue identified the EMCN as an endothelial cell marker used for cell type annotation, where it was expressed in endothelial cells and specifically showed high expression in a distinct sC9 fibroblasts subcluster [Fang et al. DOI:10.3389/fendo.2022.874915]. A study in mice demonstrated that exosomes from hypoxic mesenchymal stem cells (Hypo-Exos) significantly enhanced bone fracture healing by promoting angiogenesis, endothelial cell proliferation, and migration compared to normoxic exosomes [Liu et al. DOI:10.1016/j.actbio.2019.12.020].
