This gene encodes a member of the amelogenin family of extracellular matrix proteins. Amelogenin s are involved in biomineralization during tooth enamel development. Mutations in this gene cause X-linked amelogenesis imperfecta. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
A study in humans demonstrated the feasibility of a parallel sequencing approach for simultaneous individual and tissue identification from a single sample, which successfully included the AMELX/AMELY system for sex determination [Zubakov et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2015.04.002]. This system was sequenced alongside nine autosomal STRs and twelve tissue-specific mRNA markers using the Ion Torrent PGM, with STR results showing 100% concordance with conventional capillary electrophoresis profiling and unambiguous tissue identification achieved for all tested samples.
