Enables aconitate decarboxylase activity and protein homodimerization activity. Involved in defense response; positive regulation of antimicrobial humoral response; and tolerance induction to lipopolysaccharide. Predicted to be active in mitochondrion. Biomarker of esophageal carcinoma and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]
Forensic Context
A study in mice demonstrated that the ACOD1 transcript, associated with macrophage inflammatory response, was upregulated following cryolesion-induced traumatic brain injury and its expression was affected by microglial interleukin-6 deficiency [Sanchis et al. DOI:10.1002/glia.23758]. In a separate investigation of postmortem transcriptome dynamics in zebrafish and mouse, the ACOD1 transcript was identified as an immunity gene with increased abundance at 12 hours postmortem in zebrafish [Pozhitkov et al. DOI:10.1098/rsob.160267].
