This gene encodes one of the three alpha chains of type VI collagen, a beaded filament collagen found in most connective tissues. The product of this gene contains several domains similar to von Willebrand Factor type A domains. These domains have been shown to bind extracellular matrix proteins, an interaction that explains the importance of this collagen in organizing matrix components. Mutations in this gene are associated with Bethlem myopathy and Ullrich scleroatonic muscular dystrophy. Three transcript variants have been identified for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
Forensic Context
A study in humans identified the COL6A2 as a high-degree node in a protein-protein interaction network and a differentially expressed gene in blood samples from myocardial infarction patients, where it was downregulated in the initial RNA-seq analysis of three patients versus three controls [Zhao et al. DOI:10.3892/etm.2017.5580]. In mice selectively bred for differential methamphetamine consumption risk, multiple collagen genes, including the COL6A2, were overexpressed in the ventral midbrain of the low-drinking line compared to the high-drinking line [Hitzemann et al. DOI:10.3390/brainsci9070155].
