The eukaryotic cell cycle is governed by cyclin-dependent protein kinases (CDKs) whose activities are regulated by cyclins and CDK inhibitors. The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the cyclin family and contains the cyclin box. The encoded protein lacks the protein destabilizing (PEST) sequence that is present in other family members. Transcriptional activation of this gene can be induced by tumor protein p53. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
A study in rats demonstrated that the CCNG1 mRNA was slightly increased at all time points after a 5 psi blast exposure, showed increased expression after 10-11 psi, and exhibited augmented up-regulation at 72 hours following a 14-15 psi blast exposure, indicating its role as a cell cycle and DNA damage marker in blast-induced traumatic brain injury [Balaban et al. DOI:10.1016/j.jneumeth.2016.02.001]. In human forensic research, the CCNG1 mRNA was identified as increasingly expressed with age in a U.S. whole blood RNA-Seq dataset and was included in a list of candidate markers for predicting the chronological age of a biological stain donor [Dørum et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2023.102976]. In mice, research showed the CCNG1 was up-regulated in kidney tissue at 8 and 24 hours after 10 Gy whole-body irradiation, and a related cyclin G transcript was also up-regulated in brain tissue at the same time points post-irradiation [Zhao et al. DOI:10.1158/1078-0432.CCR-05-2418].
